What is a Thai Massage?
Traditional Thai massage is a physical therapy that combines acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga poses. It’s commonly done on a floor mat and doesn’t use any oils or lotions. During the experience, the body is pressed, pulled, stretched, and rocked. Unlike passive, relaxation-focused Western techniques, this style of massage is more invigorating and encourages energy flow by targeting ‘sen lines’. In Thai culture, sen lines are believed to be invisible channels through which energy flows in the body. These pathways are crucial to Thai massage as it guides therapists on where they focus their energy. The masseuse will use their hands, knees, elbows, and even feet to relieve tension in the client through these lines. As much as the massage is designed to relieve tension, it also leaves the client feeling flexible and energised.

Benefits of a Thai Massage
Designed to be both comprehensive and holistic, there are many benefits of Thai massage beyond only improving flexibility and stress relief. The dynamic movements and full body physical treatment also help:
Improve blood circulation
The combination yoga-like stretching and deep acupressure stimulate both blood and lymph flow.
Relieve muscle tension
Assisted stretching and localised massage at different parts of the body increase oxygenation to tissues, reducing muscle stiffness and aiding in reducing tension.
Increase range of motion
The massage’s passive stretching and compression techniques act like assisted yoga, stretching muscle fibers and increasing tissue elasticity that can reduce injuries.
Lessen headache intensity
Deep, rhythmic pressure in the neck, shoulders, and scalp release tight suboccipital muscles at the base of the skull, reducing cervicogenic tension.
Restore energy flow in the body by pressing on ‘sen’ lines
Often described as ‘lazy person’s yoga’ or ‘passive yoga’, Thai massage combines deep, rhythmic acupressure with assisted yoga-like stretches to unblock energy pathways, helping you feel refreshed.
Induce better sleep
Done for natural, non-pharmacological treatment for insomnia in the past, the combination of deep stretching, acupressure, and yoga-like movements in Thai massage relieves physical tension and calms the nervous system, which directly leads to improved sleep quality and increased relaxation.

Ask Our Expert: Insights into Luxury Wellness
How do you describe Thai massage to a first-time guest who has never experienced it?
Thai massage is often described as a blend of therapeutic bodywork and passive yoga, making it both deeply restorative and energizing at the same time.
What makes a Thai massage different from other styles of massage?
It’s a combination of acupressure, assisted stretching, and energy line work, which creates a more active and holistic experience compared to many other massage styles. Unlike oil-based massages that focus mainly on relaxation, Thai massage works on both the body and energy flow to relieve tension, improve flexibility, and restore balance.
What should someone wear or avoid before a session?
For a Thai massage session, guests are usually advised to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, as the treatment involves a lot of stretching and body movement. In our spa, special massage attire is also provided for comfort and ease. It is best to avoid a heavy meal or alcohol, as Thai massage includes pressure points and stretching techniques that may feel uncomfortable if the body is too full or dehydrated.
How long do the effects typically last after one session?
The effects of one Thai massage session can vary from person to person, depending on their physical condition, stress level, and lifestyle.
Guests often feel immediate benefits such as reduced muscle tension, improved mobility, and a sense of relaxation or lightness after the treatment. These effects may last from several hours to a few days.
For guests who receive massage regularly, the benefits can become more noticeable and longer lasting over time.
At Cliff Spa, we always encourage guests to stay hydrated and rest well after the session to help prolong the feeling of well-being.
What do you recommend guests do before and after their session to maximise results. Any rituals, hydration tips, or pairings with other spa services?
To maximize the benefits of a spa treatment, we usually recommend that the guest arrives at least 15 minutes before to allow themselves time to slow down and transition into a more relaxed state of mind. Before the session, it is best to avoid a heavy meal and to stay lightly hydrated, so the body feels comfortable. We also encourage the guest to share any tension areas, preferences, physical concerns as well as any injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy or other health concerns with the therapist, as this helps us personalise the experience more effectively.
After the session, gentle hydration or hot tea are especially important, as many guests feel more refreshed and physically open after bodywork. We also recommend taking a little quiet time afterwards, whether that means resting, enjoying the spa facilities, or simply avoiding a rushed schedule immediately after the treatment.
